Reusable Printing Paper

Will the invention of reusable printing paper spell the end for traditional ink? What about ‘traditional’ printers (I mean the company type, not the hardware type)? In fact Xerox’s ‘invention’ isn’t really even that.

The new reusable paper however, wasn’t invented to replace real paper in everyday life. It was meant to replace that paper which is kept internal in companies, the paper documents you print out and then throw out within one day. As Treehugger puts it so aptly:

Almost half of the paper used in American offices is for daily use. It is for display, not storage and, at the end of the day, it’s in the trash can. All of the energy that was put into harvesting, processing, and shipping that paper was, in the end, for less than a day’s use.

That’s a lot of paper.

A bit on the ‘new’ invention: the reusable paper actually fades after 24 hours, allowing it to be printed on again. It might be useful for other applications of course, secret documents anyone? As Gizmodo also points out – there are those conmen and nefarious characters that might use this for contracts that simply fade away.

All in all the invention of reusable printing paper isn’t going to sound the death knell for professional printing firms, it’s just going to lessen the amount of paper large companies use if they choose to adopt it. It could make for an interesting line of products in the future where vinyl is impregnated with inks (like photographic film is), the printer applies heat to thermoset the ink into place, and voila printed vinyl without the need for solvents.

Vehicle Livery

Vehicles are notoriously difficult to vinyl because of the curves on most cars. A flat, virtually two-dimensional piece of material, being applied to a definitively three-dimensional object. There is a lot of room for error.

That’s why our professional vehicle livery fitters have been doing their job for many years now – experience is a telling factor in getting it just right.

Vehicle Livery

Just as much as fitting the finished product though, is getting it designed properly in the first place. This design shows just what we mean. It IS a flat surface, yes, but the right combination of image, lettering, font, font size and so on, can mean all the world when it comes to something that will last a year or two.

This particular vehicle livery is a of a design, which has then been contour-cut to get the cat just right, rather than just sticking another vinyl of the cat over the top of the wording and cut lawn background.

Although this design isn’t exceptionally huge it is a larger-than-normal print. But then again it is designed to fit the vehicle – like all vehicle livery should be!

No Smoking Ban on July 1st

For all of England the Health Act 2006 (pdf here) will finally be enacted in force by banning smoking in public enclosed places. This is quite a step for the UK to take, even though the ban will be enacted earlier in Wales (and is already in force in Scotland).

From a sign-maker’s standpoint, we are ready to start large scale manufacture of our lines, and encourage businesses to get ordering now before the rush in the run-up to July 1st 2007.

By Patricia Hewitt‘s calculation that could mean 200,000 pubs, bars, and restaurants. That doesn’t even include factories, shops, public transport, and so on – so we imagine that many businesses are suddenly going to need No Smoking signs by July 1st 2007.
