New Printer vs Printer Inks

Here is a quandry that many businesses might face.

A new printer (of the same type and model we have at work) costs £425. The inks for that printer, a set of four, costs £230. So if you use the printer quite regularly, you might get through toner cartridges at the rate of say, one every couple of months.

It would be more cost effective for the business to purchase a new printer every 6 months than to buy in new cartridges for the existing printer. How insane is that? If the government is so serious about recycling and green initiatives they should find a way to make cheap affordable printer ink…

So if you run a business, what would you do?

Vehicle Livery on Large Van

Vehicle Livery 41

Vehicle Livery 41

I wrote this on here because I thought it was a particularly nice example of vehicle livery vinyls (click on the image to see the full, larger version).

As you can see it’s a wee bit bigger than the average car or van, and although we are fully capable of putting the vehicle vinyls on anything this was an interesting project not just for the size. The leaves as you can see are designed to wrap around the letters and as such had to be printed out using , and placed exactly into place (because as you might have gathered they don’t layer the vinyls in place, we cut them exactly as needed).

The letters themselves are standard cut , as well as the shadowing effect. All in all it does look very impressive. Here’s a close-up verison (click to see the larger version):

Flooding in Lincolnshire

flood2.jpg

We have recently had some flooding in Lincolnshire, and in particular (at least of more importance to us) here in Louth. Other places also received deluges of rainwater and flooded, such as Horncastle. Louth flooded twice however, and thankfully we were not affected, but we do want to highlight the effect that such disasters can have on businesses.

The local Co-op supermarket was flooded the first time (heavily) but was up and running within days. The second time it flooded they were more prepared, had sandbags handy, and as far as we know were not flooded badly (or at all).

Floods can have devastating effects, especially for areas that have the waters sitting for many days. Business obviously grinds to a halt and the knock-on effect to employees (whether flooded or not) can be just as traumatic.

For another look at the floods, here is a link to a video on YouTube documenting the problems Louth faces with the flooding.

Bespoke Signs

bespoke25.jpg

From a designer’s perspective you could say that all of work is bespoke. We design each one separately, and each one is unique. That even applies to those signs we produce large amounts of, such as , – each one is designed by a designer.

Some signs though, are truly bespoke – such as this one (click to see the full size picture):

It’s a sign designed for the local beauty spot, Hubbard’s Hills. As such you can’t exactly go in and place a corporate metallic sign, or a hardened plastic sign that is designed for heavy wear and tear, you have to use common sense and put something aesthetically pleasing. In this case as you see, the hardened oak frame is fitting for the area of natural beauty, and the sign facing (although in and ) uses soft pastel colours that are used for aesthetic tastes.

The sign can also be seen on our site in the section, along with several others that are especially unique.

How Much Time Should a Small Business Devote to Blogging?

Here’s a question that really stymied the management.

How much time should a (this) small business devote to blogging? And, on top of that, how much time should be given to developing the blog and/or website?

It’s a given that the website was updated/upgraded just over a year ago. It has flourished, and has achieved the purposes for which it was built (to obtain leads and business, and to serve as a marketing tool for the business). Work is continually performed on the website and blog, updating it, adding new content, but in particular the question was asked of the blog.

Right now, one person writes the articles but they come from every corner of the business. Everyone can suggest something, the management decides what they want, and the article gets written. Some of it is thought provoking, other articles are marketing signs we have produced, or writing news-worthy articles for general consumption. Should the powers that be however, spend time each day reading and/or writing on the blog (either articles or comments)? That was the question.

So given that this is a small business, and if you are in the same boat, why not join our poll and see if we can get some response back on this question.

Has the No Smoking Ban Affected You?

We were talking the other day about the No Smoking Ban in England, and whether or not it had affected us directly. Since none of us smoke it wasn’t something we really thought much about, except when we went to a restaurant or to the pub. So we wondered if it had really affected many people? Were people ready for the ban anyway?

So here’s our poll, answer honestly, let’s see if there has been an effect:

{democracy:3}

This is the first in our series of polls regarding the no smoking ban, and for now we just want to know if the ban has affected you, not -how- it has affected you.

Thanks!
