Created from modular sections of aluminium, this clear and straightforward example of a wayfinding sign is easy to follow and understand.

Fixed to the spot using concrete it is permanently in position.

Notice in the top left there is a University of Lincoln logo making this a corporate sign.

Health Sign

With the majority of NHS signs having a similar appearance, part of the corporate image, this is one that has some variation and adaptation to it.

Clearly you can see the corporate image, but instead of a flat aluminium composite sheet fixed to a wall, this is one that has been formed into a tray. With the wide format printed vinyl applied to the face, it then has some modular components added to let people change the name and/or add names.

Although this isn’t as fancy as some modular signs can be, you might even say it is understated, it fulfills it’s purpose well by being clear and concise. It doesn’t clutter itself up with many images or make the text too large, and where it is positioned in the front of the library it is something many people will make use of.

The modular nature of the sign is clear, and in this case we replaced some text. The individual slatz are constructed from aluminium and the text is achieved using vinyl.

Clearly of course, this is a wayfinding sign. Although you can only see the top of the foot, it is sitting inside a box with plants in it, to lend it a more acceptable appeal.

This style of sign is called a modular sign, created using slatz that can be interchanged when required. They are sturdy, but built for indoors use.

Although primarily considered to be a modular sign it’s purpose could be classified as a wayfinding sign, allowing someone to find their way to an end point using a series of directions from signs such as this one.

The slatz themselves are built from aluminium, and the text is created using vinyl text.

This was a big job and the fitting crew left early in the morning to reach the location. Large deep holes needed to be dug, concrete poured and set with the poles in place, and then all the modular aluminium panels dropped into exact position.

As you may see the fitting crew in this case are stood on the scaffolding they erected behind the sign, and in shot to show just how large the sign was, and showing us they wore their safety gear.

College Sign 33

Here is an example of a modular college sign that has had a life before, shown here with the college putting a new livery on the top section. This new livery is created with wide format printed vinyl with a protective matt clear vinyl face on it, applied to both sides of this sign on site.

A good example of an NHS sign, this is clearly a health sign for a hospital, but also very clearly a corporate sign because of the prominent and ever-present logo.

This health wayfinding sign is constructed using aluminium panels, that have been sprayed to achieve the right colour, and vinyl text that is applied to the panels. It is a modular sign construction, sturdy and found all over the UK, and will last for many years.

Not all wayfinding signs are straightforward lists of places with arrows pointing in every direction – some of the wayfinding signs can be aesthetic and designed to fit in with the surroundings. This sign from the Harrogate College uses a modular system with their corporate logo.

The font style is clean and easy to read, large enough to see from a distance, applied using vinyl text, and there aren’t too many options to view – avoiding confusion when looking at a wayfinding sign.

This style of wayfinding sign would be considered a directional sign because of the arrows pointing in a particular direction.

Training with Spandex

This was the whole point of the training session we recently had with Spandex, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of modular products for signs.

This was one of those times when all of the staff were involved; those who designed the signs, those who constructed and manufactured them, those who cut vinyls, and so on. We all participated and got our hands dirty, so to speak.

The gentleman on the right is the one training us; he gave us a challenge to use the bits and pieces we had in the workshop and sure enough, we managed to come up with something (with his guidance as to what special item we could construct).

The training was useful for all of us I think, we each learned something new about the products and what they were capable of, as well as learning new bits of information about existing hardware we already used. Familiarity with the names of products, and constructing them as we have always done is fine, but knowing how they were meant to be used from the horse’s mouth can sometimes give you a bit of knowledge that can prove more useful than doing what you’ve always done.

This sign is both a modular sign and a corporate sign, white vinyl text and graphics applied on a powder coated aluminium face. Clear vandal-resistant overlay has been applied to give the sign protection.
