Wayfinding Sign 42

Well there is no better name for a wayfinding sign than the one that you see here – Willerby Hill Site Plan. It’s straightforward about its purpose.

The design of the map is very clear and concise, with the NHS Trust’s buildings in blue, the prohibition of parking on the main road in red (as are all prohibition signs or notices) and then also on the bottom of the sign there is a small section for directional wayfinding to direct people to specific locations.

The sign itself is constructed using 11g aluminium and the sign face is created using wide format printing.

There are many wayfinding signs that give directions, arrows and names that point to a rough area of where to go, but there are also wayfinding signs like this one which is very detailed. It isn’t difficult to follow, and clearly printed it can be ready easily by almost anyone.

The face is created using wide format printing which is then applied to an aluminium composite backboard. Given a further durable vinyl covering it will last several years outside at the University of Huddersfield.

Created from modular sections of aluminium, this clear and straightforward example of a wayfinding sign is easy to follow and understand.

Fixed to the spot using concrete it is permanently in position.

Notice in the top left there is a University of Lincoln logo making this a corporate sign.

Health Sign

With the majority of NHS signs having a similar appearance, part of the corporate image, this is one that has some variation and adaptation to it.

Clearly you can see the corporate image, but instead of a flat aluminium composite sheet fixed to a wall, this is one that has been formed into a tray. With the wide format printed vinyl applied to the face, it then has some modular components added to let people change the name and/or add names.

Health Sign

By law the health signs that are in the UK, at least as far as the NHS goes, have one uniform colour and design. There is a little leeway on wording and sizes but there are rules on how signage must be designed.

Here you can see an NHS sign that is also a wayfinding sign.

Given that it is an NHS sign as mentioned, this is also a corporate sign because of the NHS logo.

Here is a large wayfinding sign created using wide format printing. The sheet as one piece is covered with an extra piece of durable clear matt vinyl, and then applied to an aluminium composite sheet.

With slightly rounded corners it appears clean and graceful, yet obviously it is a functional wayfinding sign.

Also what seems obvious is the few symbols on the sign, one which you could consider a corporate symbol, and the other obvious symbols on the sign help people to locate the wayfinding end points.

Tactile Sign 10

Tactile signs are, I am afraid to say, something that many sighted people tend to overlook. These are however, found everywhere if you look carefully.

The sign itself is also the endpoint of a wayfinding route. It is made from a large aluminium slat.

The tactile section of the sign, at the bottom, follows regulations and it is firmly and irrevocably affixed to the aluminium.

Modular Sign 30

Although this isn’t as fancy as some modular signs can be, you might even say it is understated, it fulfills it’s purpose well by being clear and concise. It doesn’t clutter itself up with many images or make the text too large, and where it is positioned in the front of the library it is something many people will make use of.

The modular nature of the sign is clear, and in this case we replaced some text. The individual slatz are constructed from aluminium and the text is achieved using vinyl.

Clearly of course, this is a wayfinding sign. Although you can only see the top of the foot, it is sitting inside a box with plants in it, to lend it a more acceptable appeal.

Modular Sign 29

This style of sign is called a modular sign, created using slatz that can be interchanged when required. They are sturdy, but built for indoors use.

Although primarily considered to be a modular sign it’s purpose could be classified as a wayfinding sign, allowing someone to find their way to an end point using a series of directions from signs such as this one.

The slatz themselves are built from aluminium, and the text is created using vinyl text.

Wide Format Printing 53

A great fairly close-up picture of a wayfinding sign, this clearly shows how detailed some wayfinding signs can be. The nature of wide format printing allows us to print to a very fine detail, enabling wayfinding signs such as this one to be very accurate.

The printing itself is applied to an aluminium composite sheet, then fixed firmly to the wall.

The map itself has real images of locations and pointers to them on the map, and you can also see the corporate logo in the bottom right corner.
