When we are looking for photographs to display on the site, we try to find signage that displays the more well-known aspects of each signage category; for example wayfinding signage that shows different locations and how to get there.

But there is also this kind of wayfinding signage, signs that display the location at the end of the arrows. This is one such sign, showing the room number and name, and in this particular case the university corporate logo.

Just because you think of something in one way, doesn’t mean it gets done that way all the time!

Universities are a prime example of sites that need accurate and legible wayfinding signs, students, staff, and visitors all need to get to their destinations with the minimum of fuss.

The sign has been positioned in a very prominent location, and carefully placed by the fitters too, so as not to disturb existing flowerbeds.

Constructed from aluminium composite and aluminium posts, with wide format printed vinyl showing the carefully thought out design.

As an anti-vandalism measure, an extra layer of vinyl has been added.

Many large buildings, and in this case a University, need extensive wayfinding signs to make sure people can get to their destination. Clear and concise these wayfinding signs need to be simple and easy to understand.

This projecting sign is created from aluminium composite which has the information printed using wide format printing, and another protective layer of vinyl added on top of that.

This style of directional sign is a type of wayfinding sign called a fingerpost. They are very good, when positioned correctly, at accurately directing someone to a location, more so than a traditional flat sign with a list of locations and arrows. It is however, used for places where there are less locations to direct to.

Placed on a single aluminium post, the fingerposts themselves are made from 11g aluminium. The text and logo is created using wide format printing with an anti-vandalism layer added on top.

The picture belies the true size of this large wayfinding sign, created using 11g aluminium and large wide format printed vinyl pieces. These have clear vinyl anti-vandalism layers on top, serving a dual purpose: protection against vandalism and protection against the weather.

Colour coded to show the various sections of the wayfinding map, the map even has the ‘You are here’ clearly marked (many wayfinding maps show these quite tiny).

The sign is large enough to warrant four aluminiun posts, to make sure it stays in place in bad weather.

If you need to get people somewhere, then you need a wayfinding sign – the only thing is, there are SO many ways to make wayfinding signs!

This one is specific to a location, because the arrow points to a single place. The sign itself only labels a single place too, so it’s very bespoke.

The colour is a muted yellow, suitable for use indoors, and the writing is clear and legible, very easy to read for the vast majority of the population.

Unlike many of the wayfinding signs that you see, this one in the image is an example where we have used wide format printing to print a vinyl face to show the graphical logo rather than just simple text.

The projecting sign itself is created from aluminium composite.

Colour coding works well for large wayfinding signs like this one. Each section represents a part of the industrial park as you can see and as you can see on the sign itself, reading, ‘All areas are colour coded to help you navigate your way around the estate’.

The more we see them, perhaps the more we take them for granted, but the humble wayfinding sign should never be overlooked. We use them every single day, but tend not to notice their design, but rather notice the information that they do, or do not, provide.

This is a clean design, created for the University of Huddersfield (as you can see), printed onto a single piece of vinyl using wide format printing, then applied to a solid aluminium composite board.

Yes it is simple, but it’s purpose is to pass on the information, rather than to dazzle for it’s own merit. So, it has achieved that, wouldn’t you say?
