Colour coding works well for large wayfinding signs like this one. Each section represents a part of the industrial park as you can see and as you can see on the sign itself, reading, ‘All areas are colour coded to help you navigate your way around the estate’.

The more we see them, perhaps the more we take them for granted, but the humble wayfinding sign should never be overlooked. We use them every single day, but tend not to notice their design, but rather notice the information that they do, or do not, provide.
This is a clean design, created for the University of Huddersfield (as you can see), printed onto a single piece of vinyl using wide format printing, then applied to a solid aluminium composite board.
Yes it is simple, but it’s purpose is to pass on the information, rather than to dazzle for it’s own merit. So, it has achieved that, wouldn’t you say?

The aim of course is to make it clear to someone who is lost, how to find where they are going. That’s not always easy, but with directories like this, with clearly defined floors, it makes it a little easier.

This style of aluminium sign is becoming very popular, probably because it is iconic and draws a lot of attention. With the right design on it it can be part of the architecture rather than pointing people towards it.
The photograph itself is very good, showing the sign is full sunshine next to the building (on the right). Clearly you can see the name of the place, the Carnegie Pavilion, and the corporate logo at the very top, the Leeds Metropolitan University logo.
Another feature to point out is one of the main features of this monolith – the wayfinding map right in the middle. Someone wanting to know where they are in relation to other buildings would have no problem finding that out using this rather amazing bespoke sign.

Wayfinding signs aren’t always small, they aren’t always directories placed indoors, here is one example that won’t be surpassed anytime soon. This is a large external wayfinding sign that really makes people take notice.
This sign is created using >aluminium composite that has been fixed to an already existing sign. The entire sign is already in place and as you can see it is held in place by four aluminium posts rather than the standard two.
The slight image effects in the sign that you can see, are reflections from the van parked right next to the sign. You can see the very front of the van in the bottom left, which might give you an idea of how large the sign really is.

Well there is no better name for a wayfinding sign than the one that you see here – Willerby Hill Site Plan. It’s straightforward about its purpose.
The design of the map is very clear and concise, with the NHS Trust’s buildings in blue, the prohibition of parking on the main road in red (as are all prohibition signs or notices) and then also on the bottom of the sign there is a small section for directional wayfinding to direct people to specific locations.
The sign itself is constructed using 11g aluminium and the sign face is created using wide format printing.
